Eczema and Stress

Researchers have recently discovered the biological mechanism that links stress to eczema flare-ups.

  • Stress does not cause eczema, but it can worsen symptoms, especially in people with chronic eczema (atopic dermatitis).
  • The key discovery:
Scientists identified specific nerve cells (neurons) that respond to stress and trigger inflammation in the skin.
  • How it works biologically:
    • Stress activates certain neurons connected to the brain.
    • These neurons release inflammatory proteins.
    • These proteins attract immune cells called eosinophils.
    • The increase in these cells intensifies skin inflammation, worsening eczema symptoms.
  • Why this matters?
    • Stress doubled the number of inflammatory cells in the skin.
    • Blocking these neurons prevented stress from aggravating eczema.
  • It could lead to new targeted treatments, such as blocking stress-sensitive nerves or the inflammatory molecules they produce.
