Thoughts are just thoughts. Treat them like on of the physiological functions of your body.
This means:
- not identifying yourself with your thoughts
- not making them a rule of life
- Observe and Decide what to do with them
If you notice your breathing is accelerating, you can pause and consciously slow it down, breathing deeply - you have the control on it when you want. Similarly, if your thoughts race, overwhelm you, and take over your mind, decide to quiet that flow. Yes ! you have the control on it.
1. Observe, without judgment or preconceptions, as if it were an object.
2. Distance yourself from this object, as if you were holding it.
3. Decide what you want to do with it.
4. Focus your mind on the present, on the concrete, on your sensations through your five senses.

Do this whenever your thoughts overwhelm you. Like any new skill, it will be tricky at first, but gradually it will become second nature.
You are not your thoughts; you are so much more.
Your five senses will reveal this to you.
