Sophrosyne or Hubris?

In private life as well as in business

Sophrosyne, from ancient Greek, is the “disposition to Wisdom and moderation in desires and actions, characteristic of moral balance .”

Whereas hubris refers to pride, excess and arrogance, considered unacceptable among the ancient Greeks.

The word Sophrology, created in the 1960s, was constructed from the word “science” and the ability to become “sane of mind or heart.”

Practicing Sophrology therefore means developing one’s capacity for temperance rather than impatience, self-control rather than absolute self-confidence, inner calm rather than mental agitation and resentment, mastery of one’s emotions rather than the influence of emotions, the vision of lived Reality rather than memory, imagination and fantasy. It also means knowing one’s needs, one’s limits and one’s own capacities, without overestimation.

Sophrology, this path of self-knowledge teaches you to:

  1. Practice conscious moderation. This is a concept that we also find in YOGA. It’s not about depriving ourselves, but simply being aware on a daily basis of what we decide to buy, eat, and consume.
The best way to do this is to take a PAUSE. When the mind says, “I really want these new shoes,” suggest, “Okay, I’ll see if I still want them at the end of the week.”
Don’t you think we have TOO MUCH? Materially, but also in terms of external stimulation, subscriptions, and emotions?
  2. Cultivate calm in the midst of chaos and exercise self-control. This paradox is often beneficial for our nerves, our minds, and our health. DON’T GET OVERWHELMED! As soon as you become aware that agitation, chaos is rising around you, instead of rushing headlong into it, use your own developed technique to restore calm within yourself (even if you are under pressure to provide an answer). Chaos and haste don’t always lead to good decisions.
What technique? Breathing, grounding your feet, jaw/shoulder relaxation, writing, talking to a friend, etc.
  3. Let go of the arrogance of wanting to know, control, or master everything. Instead, recognize your limits and move forward with confidence. A whole field of learning awaits you.
The danger of arrogance is that you’ll end up physically and psychologically exhausted.

Sophrology is not about control but about listening.

By calming your mind, nervous system, and body, you will access the Wisdom advocated by the ancient Greeks’ Sophrosyne.
Enjoy your discovery.
